Meet the Leaders 2 (Dr. Boddeke, Dr. Eggen and Dr. Sibon)

 Meet the Leaders
2014.4.30

We held an interactive seminar with Dr. Boddeke, Dr. Eggen and Dr. Sibon, neurological scientists from the Groningen University, on 17th March 2014.  The seminar contained two sessions: Research presentation and Group discussion. In the first session, Dr. Sibon gave us a wonderful talk about her research. In the second one, we discussed the following question; “What skills do GOOD researchers have?” In both sessions, we enthusiastically interacted with guests, and learned a lot of things which are important for being sophisticated scientists. The 2nd Meet the Leaders was really enjoyable and fruitful for IPBS students.

I organized the 2nd Meet the Leaders with Hirofumi Harada, and enjoyed it very much. In the first session, what was the most impressive to me was the active interaction between the IPBS students and Dr. Sibon. Because her story was really interesting and comprehensive, the IPBS students became interested in her research, and asked many questions. In the group discussion, the professors taught us many important things not only for conducting researches but also for managing projects. Because I have never considered how to manage research projects, it was great opportunity to think about it for me.

Through the work as an organizer of this event, I experienced various difficulties, but I could overcome them with help of Hirofumi and other members. I would like to appreciate the kind supports of my friends.

I believe smoothening human-relationship is one of essential things for the leadership. IPBS students have been trained to get proficiency in English and to facilitate academic meeting through the curriculum. Arima and I thus organized ‘The 2nd Meet the Leaders’ to make a practical experience through organization of an interactive seminar. Thanks of kind help by Prof. Yasushi Okamura, we successfully made constructive workshops with the three prominent neurologists.

I had a lot of troubles not only to facilitate discussion but to explain Japanese culture to the guests. That is partially because it was the first time for me to organize such a seminar. I really thought we should make intensive trials and actions as many as possible to get used to such a situation. This experience surely encouraged me to the next steps.

Finally, I would like to express my great gratitude to the guests and all attendees. This meeting could not be succeeded without dedicated support by coordinators and all staff in IPBS program.
