General IPBS Information

IPBS is an interdepartmental graduate training program in biomedical sciences. IPBS faculty members are drawn from the graduate schools of Medicine, Pharmacological Sciences, Engineering, Frontier Biosciences, Science, Dentistry and also from pharmaceutical industries including Chugai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd and Shionogi & Co., Ltd.

IPBS has a number of curricula aimed at bringing students and researchers together from different departments and institutions to share their work on topics of mutual interest in class and research settings. For example, the intensive interdisciplinary biomedical courses taught by our program faculty are held during the first two years. Researchers from the industry will be invited for seminars on drug development and corporate leadership from the second year.

Students completing the program will be ready for careers at the front lines of interdisciplinary research collaboration in the industrial, academic and governmental sectors.

There are two types of admission:

  1. by recommendation from our affiliated schools (4 year program, second-year entrance)
  2. from a general applicant pool (5 year program)
    It is expected that applicants for general admission have Japanese language skills (necessary for the first year curriculum).

The program is run in English from the second year.

The program also includes;

  • Interdisciplinary research seminars in English
  • Laboratory rotations in various fields
  • Internships at our overseas partner institutions
  • International symposia organized and run by students
  • Internships at pharmaceutical companies
