Meet the Leaders 10 (Masayuki Uehara, Ph.D.)

 Meet the Leaders
2015.11.17

We invited Dr. Masayuki Uehara as the speaker for the 10th Meet the Leaders.
He works for a famous Japanese company, and is collaborating with Shinshu University for making innovative tools to diagnose infectious diseases. Also, he holds a science class, Seimei-kagaku kyositsu, to introduce the latest technologies or scientific topics to children, mainly. Thus, he has two jobs, the one is a worker for a company and the other one is a teacher of science for general people. (But the second one is non-profit, actually).
He gave us a lecture about his career and the importance of “Parallel Career”. Especially, the latter part of his talk was very educative for us because it is not so often to consider about having two careers at the same time. The audience was absorbed in his speech, and discussed holding Parallel Career from various points of view, actively. I hope that the discussion was helpful to enlarge their vision for the future career. Finally, I would like to appreciate Dr. Uehara giving us a great opportunity to interact with a PhD holder with fantastic career path, even though he was so busy for his work.

Dr. Masayuki Uehara was invited as a speaker of 10th Meet the Leaders.
He works at a famous precision equipment manufacturer, and also gives scientific lectures and performances for children at no charge. He taught us the importance of doing a second job in parallel with a main job. He called this kind of work style as “parallel career”. He studied developmental biology in his Ph.D course, and started to work at the company after the reception of Ph.D. He was happy to work at the company, but he was not able to research basic biology, which rarely relates to business. He tried to be directly involved with science, specifically biology, so he decided to open the scientific class for children at his free time. In this class, Dr. Uehara does not only give a lecture, but also show some experiments relating to the topics. He said that he was very happy to teach science to children and also could improve communication skills through the activities.
He recommended having parallel careers in order to get refreshed and not to lose jobs. He was very friendly, and his presentation was clear and attractive. I appreciate his coming and giving us a precious opportunity to think about a parallel career.
