Meet the Leaders 1 (Prof.G.Balakrish Nair)

 Meet the Leaders
2014.2.5

One of the important goals of IPBS is to educate young scientists to undertake global scale collaborations in order to
develop effective modalities for intractable diseases.

To achieve this goal the program has recruited partners from both academia and industry.

Such collaborative ventures certainly provide a fertile ground for innovation and networking along with exposure to latest
technological capabilities.

Yet, with this ever advancing cutting edge technology the future seek for dedicated and passionate researchers who are
capable of not just coming up with new possibilities and ideas but also implementing them with their leadership skills.

Thus a greater need for having the right type of leadership quality remains to be addressed in order to drive this
innovation process efficiently and effectively.

‘MEET THE LEADERS’ event is one such attempt to present the young league of researchers with a platform where they can interact with eminent scientists who have established themselves as the global leaders in the field of life science.

The series of events will be organized by the students, for the students here onwards.

In this league the first event was organized on January 23rd , 2014 at “Sawarabi", Suita campus, to meet and greet notable microbiologist and Foreign Associate of the National Academy of Sciences, USA, Prof. G.B Nair.

Prof. Nair is Executive Director of Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI), an autonomous institute by the Government of India, under the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology.

THSTI specialize in translational research which targets at medical innovations for improvement of public health.

The event was attended by IPBS students and specially appointed faculty members.

In his address Prof. Nair shared his journey as a microbiologist and experiences in Japan, USA and Bangladesh.

He explained the significance of his scientific studies in association with field work that allowed him to empathize with
sufferings of patients and dire need of cure for intractable diseases such as Cholera.

Citing THSTI as an example, he shared his recommendations on dealing with the challenges associated with bridging the gap between translational and basic research.

Prof. Nair highlighted that it is important for researchers to picture the relevance of their research in terms of its
translational value even if it has its origination in basic research.

For international students at IPBS, Prof. Nair emphasized on returning the scientific services to their native countries.

The lecture session was followed by interaction session between students and leader.

The interaction furthered the discussion on key limitations in translational and basic research interdependence and need
for more short term student exchange programs to allow field view of the diseases and their impact.

Program co-ordinator Prof. Kiyoshi Takeda credited Prof. Nair for his address and admired students for their involvement and willingness to actively participate in this event.

He said that the aim is to allow students to find their own image of leader through informal interactions and discuss
various aspects and challenges associated with leadership.

He congratulated the event organizer and IPBS students for their efforts.

Finally, at lunch hour students interacted with Prof. Nair informally and shared some anecdotes from his personal
experiences as a researcher.

With the motivation and interaction from a successful leader the event ‘Meet the Leaders’ took its first successful step in
the process of training young brigade of researchers as future leaders.

The IPBS hope to witness numerous events in this league and look forward to visits from
scientific leaders across the globe!
