On May 19th, the 3rd Meet the Leaders seminar was held with our invited guest, Dr. Mitsuhiro Yanagida, under the theme of ‘Building an own image for becoming a true leader in the field of science’. Dr. Yanagida is a professor of Okinawa
Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST), traveled a great distance to Osaka University
to meet with us. 22 students participated in this seminar with enthusiasm.
In the first session, Dr. Yanagida lectured on important key points of how to be a global scientist who can lead the
scientific field. Based on his own research experience, he delivered us many massages. Among those, we would like to
mention one strong message, which was ‘research is a succession of inheritance’.
Looking back on the history behind current research theme, we can know the main stream of the research.
The second session was held in a discussion style. Lively discussion with Dr. Yanagida helped us deepen
understandings on the essence for a career as a researcher. During the discussion, he gave us a take-home message
“Luckiness, stolidity, and patience are the three factors that make us better researchers”.
This seminar with Dr. Yanagida was truly a precious opportunity for, young graduate students like us. We will never forget the messages from Dr. Yanagida.
Finally, we would like to thank all the people who helped us organize the 3rd Meet the Leaders.
We greatly appreciate Dr. Yanagida for traveling to Osaka University and for sharing his time and experiences with us.
