Meet the Leaders 4 (Dr.Takefumi Gemba)

 Meet the Leaders
2014.7.29

“All documents must be prepared in Japanese in order to get a drug approval in Japan. It is so specific to the Japanese
system; it imposes an obstacle to globalization.” In this lecture, participants learned the current situation in the pharmaceutical industry and broad issues it faces.

Our guest speaker, Dr. Takefumi Gemba (Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Science) had worked not only as a researcher but also as a manager at a domestic pharmaceutical company.
Now, he works at Integrated Development Associates (IDA) Co., Ltd. as a head of a clinical development sector. The company helps other companies based overseas design clinical trials for drug development specifically for the Japanese market. Meanwhile, most Japanese small- and medium-sized pharmaceutical companies wish to produce new drugs at low costs, meaning they don’t want to carry out all the process for new drug development.IDA integrates demands from overseas-based companies and Japanese companies to make easier the drug approval in Japan.

To hold a seminar was requested by Dr. Gemba and me. Most graduate students in science tend to believe their only job option is to become a researcher. In reality, there are many other occupations that require scientific expertise. The purpose of this invited lecture was to introduce his current job and other non-research positions including a position
that can be experienced during the IDA’s internship. For the above reasons, we held this seminar to invite Japanese graduate students from various departments. Participants were about 15 students from the Dept. of Frontier Bioscience, the Dept. of Medicine, and the Dept. of Pharmacy.Throughout the 90 minutes of the seminar, participants actively asked Dr. Gemba questions.
After closing, I received positive feedbacks from Dr. Gemba and participants. One student told me “I received valuable information from his wealth of experience that can’t be obtained in my daily life.”

I greatly appreciate Dr. Takefumi Gemba and all the participants, Prof. Koji Yoshida, Takahashi-san, CLIC and IPBS.
