 Post-event Reports
2015.9.8

2015年8月16日(日)から10月8日(木)の2か月間、3期生のKelvin Chen君が、スウェーデン・カロリンスカ研究所で海外インターンシップを行っております。

Kelvin君からの報告です。

2015年8月22日/No.1

The first week of my internship of Karolinska is coming to a close. This week has been quite productive and I jumped right into experimental work with the kind guidance of Sumida-sensei. (中略 研究内容) Sweden is quite nice, though the weather is rather inconsistent. Everyone here speaks excellent English so I have had no problems getting around. Wish everyone all the best.

Sincerely, Kelvin Chen

Today marks the closing of week 2 of my internship at Karolinska. (中略 研究内容) I also had the opportunity to attend several interesting seminars here during my free-time. One of them required me to travel to the other campus, Huddinge. The scenery there starkly contrasts with Solna campus. There are few trees and the sidewalks are busy with people running about. I may visit there again next week for another seminar. The temperature here is getting a bit colder and I am still not accustomed to the long periods of daylight present here in Sweden. It really is a poor indicator of passing time. Safe endeavors to all, wherever you may be.

Sincerely, Kelvin Chen

The third week of my internship is coming to a close.
I was an unfortunate victim of the flu and therefore my progress this week was slightly hindered. (中略 研究内容) I have attached a group photo of the laboratory, taken during the farewell party of Marta Imreh (in the middle), a senior researcher that is retiring this year. Sumida-sensei (my supervisor/mentor) is directly right of me, wearing blue. An interesting fact is that there are no Swedes in this lab with the exception of Dr. Ohlsson, who even then, is only half Swedish. In fact, I'm told there are very few Swedes at KI, with only a handful at the MTC. As a consequence, the majority of the population is dominated by foreigners. In my laboratory, there are people from Brazil, Japan, Greece, Germany, Spain, China, Czech, Poland, Singapore and Iran! Much more diverse than our Japanese-counterparts.

Best wishes to all and stay healthy!
Sincerely, Kelvin Chen

Half-time check-in. I’ve made close to full recovery from the flu from last week and have made good progress on my experiments. (中略 研究内容) I also attended my first lab meeting in the Ohlsson group. The atmosphere and dynamic is much different my own laboratory¹s. Particularly, Prof. Ohlsson constantly promotes interaction between other members of the laboratory by asking for their feedback before giving his own opinion/insight. I believe this type of interaction ensures that everyone is on the same page and constantly thinking. Carman and Professor Miyasaka visited our laboratory at KI on Monday. Unfortunately, their busy schedule only allowed for a brief stay.

Best Regards, Kelvin Chen

2015年9月20日/No.5

Today marks the end of my fifth week here at Karolinska. As with previous weeks, this week has been rather productive with positive results.(中略 研究内容)I will know of the results early next week and hopefully, it will be successful  though this may be overly optimistic. I have also been given another project by Dr. Ohlsson(中略 研究内容) and am very excited to work on this(中略 研究内容).

I had the opportunity to attend a Karolinska Research Lecture given by Vijay Kuchroo, a well-known immunologist working with Th17 cells. He is well known for his contribution to Th17 biology and recently published a rather ‘interesting´ paper on how dietary salt intake could affect pathogenic Th17 cell induction. The main premise of his lecture was regarding the differences between pathogenic and non-pathogenic Th17 cells, highlighted by single-cell genomics. I was incredibly impressed not only by his data, but also by the cutting-edge methodologies his laboratory employed (siRNA delivery by silicone nanowires!!!). The lecture was given in the Nobel Lecture Forum where the yearly Nobel Prize announcements are made, so the feeling was a bit nostalgic; reminiscent of the times I watched the announcements being made in the same building through live internet streaming.

Next week, I will also be attending a symposium on single-cell omics and am looking forward to that as well. That’s all for now.

Sincerely, Kelvin Chen

2015年9月27日/No.6

Hope everyone is well. The end of this week marks the gradual end of my internship here in Karolinska. In terms of experiments, (中略 研究内容). The symposium I attend on Friday was great and was also conducted in the Nobel Forum. The main premise or theme was how to resolve single-cell heterogeneity using novel technologies such as systems microscopy. The sessions were very diverse, which included sub-topics on machine learning, biotechnology, tumor heterogeneity, genomic heterogeneity and molecular heterogeneity. Particularly, the power of single-cell RNA-seq was well-demonstrated (1000-3000 single-cells > than entire population of cells), especially by Sten Linnarsson. However, I worry thatwe are behind in this regard at Osaka University as we do not currently have a robust platform that can yield cost-effective results. Hopefully this will be subject to change in the near future. That’s all for now.

Sincerely, Kelvin Chen

2015年10月4日/No.7

This the last full week of my stay here at Karolinska and I am beginning to wrap up my experiments in expectation of finishing next Tuesday. My experiments for the most part, have been going well but I am a bit short on time. (中略 研究内容)

I also gave a presentation this week to the laboratory. In my presentation, I included a brief introduction to our field, my research in Japan and a progress report on my work at KI. Afterwards, Dr. Ohlsson and his wife sat down with me and gave me some feedback as well interesting insight on epigenetics and chromatin remodeling. I was very thankful for this opportunity to talk ‘science’ with them as they offered a lot of perspective and recommended me a few papers to read.

I have included two pictures of Sumida-sensei, Dr. Ohlsson and myself in front of the MTC.

Sincerely yours, Kelvin Chen
